Bahrain’s scholars call on Islamic nations to defend Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims

Bahrain’s religious scholars have called on the Muslim world to speak out against the plight of Myanmar’s Rohingya minority, demanding action from Islamic nations and governments.
“It is incumbent upon all Muslim peoples to take every initiative to defend the vulnerable Muslims in Burma [present-day Myanmar],” a statement issued by the scholars reads. “We call on Islamic countries and governments to form an Islamic alliance to defend Rohingya Muslims.”

Nearly 100,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar in recent days, uprooted by reported rapes, murders and other atrocities on the part of the country’s military.

Meanwhile, hundreds have been killed during the violence, which the United Nations says may amount to ethnic cleansing.

For their part, Bahrain’s scholars also called on Bahrainis to express their “condemnation, anger and solidarity with this Islamic and humanitarian cause.”
